oh onion my onion, how about something entirely different from the nice quiet crap I usually write? i hope you like space battles. jk I know you like space battles
Keith slams Red’s controls forward, and she blasts up with a drag of inertia that fuses Keith’s bones to his chair. The warship’s beam weapon fills the cockpit with sickly purple light as it slices through space beneath him, glancing off the castle’s shields. There’s no time to slow down. Red’s tail picks off two ships with neatly-placed shots, and three more seem to push forward to replace them.
They’re losing. They’re losing badly.
Lance shoots by in the opposite direction, peeling one of Keith’s pursuers off of him. He’s gone quiet, which is never a good sign, but he’s still fighting. The carrier ship that had warped in – that had been their first indication of the trap the Galra had sprung, that had tipped the balance of the battle irrevocably – releases another wave of attackers, and they swing in a deadly flock towards Shiro. Hunk is near him, watching his back. Keith has long since lost track of Pidge.
Keith tries to breathe, tries to calm down. Tries to figure the odds as anything but ever-shrinking. They’re all getting tired, and the castle can’t warp, and that carrier is spitting out too many ships. If they don’t figure something out, and soon…
“Hey, Shiro,” says Pidge suddenly over their comms. “I’ve got an idea. You’re not going to like it.”
So I was talking with @queenalluring and @true-lab about how Hunk has no concept of personal space and we thought,,,,what if he just picks up the others out of nowhere all the time.
When he picks up Lance, he just kinda sinks into it because Hunk is his best friend and he’s comfortable with him.
When he picks up Pidge she’s just,,,,not fazed at all, she’ll keep on with whatever she happened to be doing beforehand.
When he picks up Keith, every time, without fail, he makes this strange cat screech. The first time it startled Hunk and he almost dropped Keith.
Lance didn’t think Hunk could pick up Shiro, but when he did Lance screamed and Shiro was like “WhaaAAT issSS HAaaAppEnNiNg?!”
When he picks up Allura at first she’s like “Oh” but then he lets her sit on his shoulder and she clasps her hands and smiles down at everyone below her.
When he picks up Coran he doesn’t even stay in Hunk’s arms, he immediately climbs up to stand on Hunk’s shoulders and yell “ONWARD MY BOY!” His balance is impeccable.
i’m living for this, honestly. all joking aside, this is one of the most compelling parts of vld for me, because here we have this archetypal guy—a military hero, a man who’s stated in universe to be a legend on
multiple occasions, the unquestioned leader of voltron
but this is the side of him we get to see, over and over again:
he has this incredible vulnerability, and even if that’s not revolutionary, keith is, because here we have this sword-wielding
firecracker
loner who’s constantly watching out for him. keith is really the only one shiro feels comfortable enough showing this side of himself to, and this is the result: (pic heavy meta under the cut)
A quick observation about Shiro and the Black Lion’s bonding moment in the S2 finale: right before Shiro retrieves his bayard from Zarkon, there’s a montage of images showing us how closely he and Black have bonded. It’s all memories of their time together, and most of it’s pretty standard stuff that you’d expect, depicting their close relationship over two seasons.
There’s Black rescuing Shiro from robeasts and dino-dogs:
Black rescuing Shiro on the astral plane when they fought Zarkon together:
Flying together – pretty sure this is from the nosedive exercise, the first time they really bonded:
But… one of the memories is… a bit different:
You guys. You guys. The Black Lion remembered the time they made a Voltron cheer-pyramid and Shiro said “and I’ll form the head”. This is one of their important bonding moments. THIS NONSENSE RIGHT HERE is something the Black Lion (and possibly also Shiro) fondly looks back on as a time they bonded.
Like… how funny must this have seemed from the Black Lion’s point of view? Imagine Black standing on top of the cheerleader pyramid laughing uncontrollably to herself in whatever language giant robot lions speak.
Shiro: “Is everyone bonding and focusing?”
Black Lion: “I love you but this is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever done.”
