gold was starting to seep into his eye colour because of ansem and he was so horrified and disgusted with himself everytime he saw his reflection and he felt vulnerable having it out in the open so he covered his eyes and you can pry this headcanon from my cold dead hands until it’s directly proven otherwise
maybe he started to even see natural shadows that creep around, like how he could smell darkness in com and got really freaked out by it so being blind while it hopefully calmed down was the best option
